Burnout Doesn’t Look Like What You Think
The Real Talk
Burnout doesn’t always look like a breakdown.
It doesn’t always mean someone’s crying, quitting, or calling off. Sometimes, burnout looks like the person who never misses a day. The one who’s always busy. The one who keeps saying “I’m fine” but hasn’t really been themselves in a while.
In high-pressure industries, we learn to normalize exhaustion. But when someone’s burning out, safety takes a hit—focus slips, frustration rises, and little things get missed.
How Burnout Shows Up in the Field
🔥 Keeps working late or skipping breaks “to stay ahead”
🔥 Stops speaking up in meetings or safety huddles
🔥 Gets irritated more easily or tunes people out
🔥 Makes more mistakes, but shrugs them off
🔥 Looks physically fine—but mentally checked out
It’s not laziness. It’s not attitude.
It’s a warning sign.
What Burnout Can Sound Like
💬 “I just need to push through.”
💬 “I don’t have time to stop.”
💬 “It’s easier if I just do it myself.”
💬 “I can’t take a day off—no one else knows what’s going on.”
If you’ve said these things—or heard them from someone else—it might be time to check in.
What You Can Do Today
✅ Step away for a few minutes—yes, even in the middle of a busy day
✅ Ask someone how they’re really doing (and listen to the second answer)
✅ If you’re a leader, model healthy habits—take the break, leave on time
✅ Don’t wait until someone’s struggling to offer support
You don’t have to fix everything.
You just have to notice—and care enough to act.
Field Leader Note
Supervisors, advisors, team leads—burnout hits you, too. You carry the weight of your team, and it adds up fast.
If your fuse is short or your focus is shot, it’s not just a personal problem—it’s a safety risk.
Try this:
“Everyone’s been running hard lately. If you need space, take it. I’d rather hear from you now than after something goes wrong.”
